Why Marx?
57 STEWART AVE - ROSCOE, NY
Why Marx? Not for politics in the usual sense—not to debate communism or socialist strategy—but to think more deeply about ideas, language, and how they shape our lives. At its core, this class is about reading and thinking.
At a moment when attention feels fractured and crisis feels constant, Marx offers a model of rigorous, expansive thought. He wrote powerfully about history, literature, political economy, and modern life itself, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence philosophy, feminism, labor movements, postcolonial studies, and more.
Over 4 weeks, we will read Marx and those around him closely, paying attention not only to what they say, but how they say it. The goal is simple: to rediscover the pleasure of sentences and the excitement of ideas. The ambition is to read.
Lead by Bob Ryan.
Voluptuary: Lois Gallagher
57 STEWART AVE - ROSCOE, NY
In this month's Voluptuary Lois Gallagher, acclaimed poet and ceramics artist, will be the featured reader. Voluptuary was a long-running literary reading series and open mic in San Francisco and it has a new incarnation at The Roscoe Collective. Writers hoping to read at the open mic should sign up at the event and bring 5 minutes or less of material to read.
Lois Gallagher is a potter and poet whose work is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world. After a career in financial services, she settled in Sullivan County, NY, where she established a pottery studio and renewed her writing practice. Her poetry explores nature, community, loss, and transformation with insight, humor, and grace.

Unfinished Business: A Play
57 STEWART AVE - ROSCOE, NY
‘Unfinished Business’ is a play devised by the local women’s collective, Standing People Together. Using techniques from psychodrama and theatre of the oppressed, stories have been shared and shaped into a series of scenes. True to the nature of Augusto Boal’s ‘Forum theatre’ where the audience get to be ‘spectactors,’ we will invite you to intervene and try new strategies to change the outcome of different scenes.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.

Voluptuary: Seth Carnes - Semiotic Poetry
57 STEWART AVE - ROSCOE, NY
For over a decade, Seth Carnes has developed the concept of a mutable, semiotic poetry.
Semiotic poetry connects to the lineage of concrete and visual poetry, also Fluxus and the Beats, where text, photos, glyphs, emoji, and other symbols are channeled towards poetic, evocative, and representative readings that are often open-ended.
This contemporary poetry is generated by hand, with software, producing a mutable and interactive poem and file format, but remains connected to a long lineage of physical and analog techniques, including chance operations and cut-ups.
Because this work is more visual, his “reading” will be a digitally projected presentation of this work and lineage, followed by the creation of a collaborative improv “poetic” with the audience in realtime.
For the open mic that follows, attendees are welcome to bring traditional written and read poetry, but also expanded poetics like visual or concrete poetry.
Bio:
Seth Indigo Carnes, aka [sic], is a post-conceptual artist with a multidisciplinary practice, focused in language art, public art, digital art, cinema, performance, installation, research, and publishing.
Carnes’ projects are led by concept, process, and inquiry, making use of both physical and digital media. His artwork and projects have been featured in a variety of art venues, including PS1 MoMA, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, the Emily Harvey Foundation, Microscope Gallery, Garis & Hahn, and many more; he has also performed throughout the United States, in Europe, and Japan.
Past collaborations include work with Paul Miller (DJ Spooky), Shepard Fairey, Thierry Geoffrey, Simona Blat, and the TXT collective.
Born in California, Carnes has a BA in History from Pomona College and MS in Integrated Design and Media from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He is currently based between New York City and the Catskills.

Tributary: Jordan Harvey - “In Defense of AI as Art”
57 STEWART AVE
Jordan James Harvey, CEO of Remote Control, has spent over two decades working at the intersection of creativity, technology, and immersive media. Having led innovative projects for companies like Meta, Peloton, and NVIDIA, his work explores how emerging technologies are reshaping the creative process. Today, through Remote Control, Harvey and his team develop the infrastructure behind next-generation AI tools, including systems that allow artists to train models using their own original work.
In this thought-provoking talk, In Defense of AI as Art, Harvey explores one of the most debated questions in contemporary culture: when does AI-generated work become art? Moving beyond the usual arguments for or against artificial intelligence, he offers a more nuanced perspective on creativity, authorship, skill, and artistic intent. Whether you’re skeptical, curious, or already experimenting with AI tools, this conversation will offer a deeper understanding of how artists may adapt, evolve, and find new forms of creative expression in an AI-driven future.
