Why Marx?

57 STEWART AVE - ROSCOE, NY

Why Marx? Not for politics in the usual sense—not to debate communism or socialist strategy—but to think more deeply about ideas, language, and how they shape our lives. At its core, this class is about reading and thinking.

At a moment when attention feels fractured and crisis feels constant, Marx offers a model of rigorous, expansive thought. He wrote powerfully about history, literature, political economy, and modern life itself, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence philosophy, feminism, labor movements, postcolonial studies, and more.

Over 4 weeks, we will read Marx and those around him closely, paying attention not only to what they say, but how they say it. The goal is simple: to rediscover the pleasure of sentences and the excitement of ideas. The ambition is to read.

Lead by Bob Ryan.
